Using the above as a general title, we are printing two articles by Jorge Dias concerning this period of Japanese rise to power - the awakening of Japanese nationalism in the international scene.
The writers who are the inspiration behind the notes and commentaries enriching and clarifying these articles were linked by the fact that they were both Portuguese.
Venceslau de Morais' postcards offer a useful illustration of the Japan discussed in the articles and they are excellently complemented by Jorge Dias' notes and captions.
