Outdoor Performing Arts Showcase at Barra Square Four consecutive days of talented performances
The 26th Macao Arts Festival, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the Outdoor Performing Arts Showcase, included in the commemorative activities of the 10th anniversary of the inscription of Macao’s heritage, to be held on four consecutive days between 28 and 31 May, from 6.30pm to 9pm, at Barra Square. The showcase programme includes extraordinary local and foreign performances and admission is free.
Coinciding with the A-Má festivities held in May, the Outdoor Performing Arts Showcase is exceptionally brought to Barra Square, where local groups will perform operas for deities in its bamboo theatre, thereby carrying on the festive atmosphere and allowing several of the city’s neighbourhood’s communities to come into contact with the arts. Performances are very diverse, including Turkish Shadow Play, Xinjiang Uigur Mukam Dance, Chizhou Nuo Opera and Indian Awantika Kathak Dance as well as Chinese dances, folk dances, street dances and drama performances by local groups.
Other brilliant performances also take to the stage this weekend. Trust, by the German theatre company Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, is a production by Falk Richter, one of Europe’s most important theatrical voices, and Anouk van Dijk, celebrated dancer and choreographer, that explores the trust among people and the collapse of human relationships following the financial crisis, through a double performance of dialogues and movements and the flow between them.
In response to the public’s demand, the Macao Orchestra presents an additional performance of Music of the Imagination – Children’s Day Concert on 30 May, combining original animations and classical music and offering children a cheerful and animated visual and auditory concert. Tickets for these shows are now limited.
The Macao Cultural Centre Small Auditorium also hosts, on 29 and 30 May, the play Dot, which will take the young audience on a wondrous journey across music and colours.
