Chinese calligraphy is the art of writing and a truly distinctive visual art based on Han characters. However you don’t need to know how to write them to be able to appreciate the beauty of this art form.
In conjunction with exhibition The Present of the Past: Calligraphy and Seals of Ma Guoquan, MAM specially launches ‘The Present of the Past: Calligraphy Emulation Contest’, open to the public. Entries will be uploaded to MAM’s Facebook page, from which MAM will select 20 award-winning works based on audience’s number of ‘Likes’, as well as an evaluation by professionals. Winners will be awarded one copy of the exhibition catalogue ‘The Present of the Past: Calligraphy and Seals of Ma Guoquan’.

Requirements for entry and submission method:
- Participants should emulate the designated exhibit(s) and each participant can submit a total of three emulations. (Works for emulation can be downloaded at “information & application form” on the website.)
- Maximum dimension for each emulation work is 100cm X 50cm; the works must be written with brush, on Xuan paper.
- Personal information including participant’s name, Macao mobile phone number, gender and email address should be attached to the entry submission.
- FOR SUBMISSION: works can be delivered by hand or sent by post (with the envelope indicating: The Present of the Past: Calligraphy Emulation Contest), to The Reception, 1F, Macao Museum of Art, Av. Xian Xing Hai, Macao. (Postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the application date.)
Receiving time: 10:00am –7:00pm, from 14th May to 13th June (Closed on Mondays)
New works will be uploaded every Friday: 24th May; 31st May; 7th June; 14th June.
Announcement of Results: Winners will be announced on MAM website on Tuesday, 9th July. Winners will be directly informed by SMS for picking up their prize within the designated period – one copy of ‘The Present of the Past: Calligraphy and Seals of Ma Guoquan’ catalogue – from the Reception, 1F, Macao Museum of Art.
Remarks:
- The Present of the Past: Calligraphy and Seals of Ma Guoquan is on show at the Special Exhibition Gallery, Handover Gifts Museum of Macao, from 25th April through 16th June, 2013.
- Macao Museum of Art reserves the right of final decision, without possibility of appeal.
