Geography:

Macao is located between 22°06’- 22°13’N and 113°34’- 113°35’E. It covers an area of 30.5 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 650.000. (2003).
Macao has been given quite a variety of nicknames, namely “Haojiang” (River of Oysters), “Haohai” (Sea of Oysters), “Haojing” (Oyster-shape Mirror), “Majiao” Haojing’ao” (Oyster Port) and Xiangshan'ao (Fragrant mountain Port). Located in the southeast coastal area of China, at the west bank of the Pearl River estuary, it is 60 kilometres away from Hong Kong. The Region faces the South China Sea on the south and borders Zhuhai in the Guangdong province in the north. Macao consists of Macao peninsula, Taipa and Coloane islands. Hills and terrace are widespread within the border and Coloane features the highest point in the Region (170.6m above sea level). The total land area of Macao was only 10.9 square kilometres in 1910 but has now been increased to 30.5 square kilometres through a process of extensive land reclamation.
