Biographical Notes

Gisela João, Vocals

Gisela João is a central figure and one of the most important interpreters of fado and Portuguese music today. She has garnered numerous accolades, including the Revelation prize at the 8th Amália Awards Gala, Best Solo Performer at the 19th Golden Globes (Portuguese media), and is a constant presence on national and international stages.

Born in 1983 in the Portuguese northern city of Barcelos, she began listening to fado on the radio at a young age, and she immediately fell for it. Having moved to Lisbon, Gisela made a name for herself when she started singing in fado houses. In 2013, she released her debut album Gisela João, to great critical acclaim. In two weeks, the record hit the top of the national charts and made it to Platinum. In 2021, Gisela released AuRora, her most personal and intimate album to date, marking her debut as a composer and lyricist.

Springing from an influential generation of new singers who follow the great Amália Rodrigues’s footsteps, Gisela has established herself in contemporary fado sticking to its traditional matrix without deviation or artifice, delving into its authenticity, without excesses or mannerisms.
