Tjipta Boedaja Arts Centre
Jathilan is a Javanese traditional art featuring energetic dance and music. Dancers often wear costumes depicting figures from the Javanese folklore, such as horsemen or mythological creatures, portraying epic stories, battles, myths and legends.
Historically, it was used as a form of camouflage in war training, during the Java War against the Dutch colonialists. Dancers disguise themselves as bamboo horses as a training for soldiers in developing war strategies against enemy troops. Jathilan is not just a traditional art, but also a cultural heritage displaying the cultural richness, the historical values and struggles of the Javanese.
