Witness to Disintegration – The Three Brothers

The Three Brothers is a production by Portuguese contemporary dance company My Own Name (Nome Próprio). Created by Victor Hugo Pontes, the company’s prolific artistic director, the piece is based on a play by Gonçalo M. Tavares. It highlights the unison of visual composition and textual narration, as it explores the love and the struggles between three siblings.

Between reckonings of fortune and misfortune, every creator, performer, even every spectator, has their own defying logic and causality views on family. In light of this, the choreographer provided keywords that might be directly or indirectly related with the theme and the creation of the text. The result is a dramatic narrative full of twists and turns that breaks free from linearity. Through fragmented dialogues, touching on the protagonists’ daily lives, childhood memories and conversations with their parents, the work untangles intertwined emotions of love and hate.
