Dark thirst for power

This is Shakespeare like we have never seen or heard before! Macbettu is a physical theatre play transposing the classical Macbeth to the Sardinia’s ancient culture and language. Conceived by Alessandro Serra, one of the most personal directors on the Italian stage, this daring take delivers an all-male cast in the purest Elizabethan tradition.

The Bard’s ever-contemporary story of ambition and betrayal has been re-written into a lucid, yet passionate reflection on human abyss. In a spectacle of images, sounds and hypnotic gestures, Macbettu takes us back to ancient times, revisiting classical archetypes through ancestral rituals, in a struggle between characters, against the primordial forces of nature. An empty space is filled by rocks, dust, iron and blood, crossed by the actors’ martial physicality. The sombre setting draws locations and evokes presences in a play that launched Serra’s work on the international scene.

Distinguished as Best Production by the Italian UBU Awards, this show hasn’t stopped touring ever since it premiered. Thoroughly soaked in the remains of distant civilizations, this reinvented Shakespearean masterpiece has now eventually reached us. An intense ride, certainly not meant for the fainthearted.
