A dance classic turned contemporary fairy tale

We will remain wide awake, mesmerized by the thrills of Sleeping Beauty, a rereading of Tchaikovsky’s iconic score by the Lyon Opera Ballet. Reshaped by Spanish innovator Marcos Morau, this choreography revisits a classic performed by a powerful cast on a refined, seemingly simple setting. Based on the widely known fairy tale, the ballet uses a range of theatrical tools to create a meticulous universe of mysterious figures and ghostly images. Delving into a blend of organic and geometric textures, this sensorial, emotional narrative twists collective imaginary, condensing the story’s substance, transposing it to the here and now. The choreographer dares to pose questions, wondering what would princess Aurora discover if she woke up from her long sleep in today’s world.

With a prolific career based in Europe, Morau has been distinguished in numerous competitions and worked with various companies. Halfway between drama and dance, his creations have earned him invitations to stages and festivals across continents.

With a vast choreographic repertory, always craving for new creative territories, the Lyon Opera Ballet will be back in town, 19 years after their last visit. This production is undoubtfully an outstanding part of the company’s rich, exciting trail of artistic achievement. Luckily, they are now sharing it with us!
