Date of publication: 23/01/2019
Type: Exhibition

Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), the exhibition “Oneness: Calligraphy by Professor Jao Tsung-I” will be inaugurated on Friday, 25 January, at 3pm, at the Jao Tsung-I Academy. All are welcome to attend.

Professor Jao Tsung-i was an internationally renowned sinologist who has made outstanding contributions in the fields of academia, painting and calligraphy and literature. Professor Jao had a profound connection with Macao and had devoted his support to Macao’s culture by generously donating his painting and calligraphy works to cultural departments and museums under the Macao S.A.R. Government. In order to showcase his calligraphic achievements and commemorate the first anniversary of his passing, with the help of the Macao Museum of Art, the Jao Tsung-I Academy selected 15 sets of calligraphic works by Professor Jao for the exhibition “Oneness: Calligraphy by Professor Jao Tsung-I”, allowing the public to fully appreciate his calligraphy and feel the complex beauty and profundity of Chinese characters.

Having practiced calligraphy since an early age, Professor Jao was mentored by various calligraphers, capitalising on various schools’ strengths to create his own style; moreover, his mastery of oracle bone script, “bamboo/wood script” and silk script enabled him to write calligraphy in palaeographic script, which is both innovative and unique. One of the aims in establishing the Jao Tsung-I Academy is to promote Professor Jao’s academic and artistic achievements. This exhibition showcases the calligraphy works by the Professor, allowing the public to have a glimpse of the elegance and magnificence of Chinese characters and thereby realise the profundity of Chinese culture, while appreciating his aspiration of “studying, cultivating and achieving in both academia and the arts”.

The exhibition will be held from 26 January to 30 September, at the Jao Tsung-I Academy. It is open daily, including on public holidays, from 10am to 6pm (no admission after 5:30pm), and closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
