The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents Letter from an Unknown Woman and World, two pieces displaying some of the finest performing arts currently produced in Beijing, scheduled for the first two weeks of the new year.

Conceived by Meng Jinghui, one of China’s most influential theatre directors, Letter from an Unknown Woman takes to CCM’s Grand Auditorium Huang Xiangli, an actress highly praised in the country by her resourceful monologue skills. In this adaptation of a 1922 book by Austrian author Stefan Zweig, Xiangli convincingly builds an incisive portrait, bringing to life a woman trapped in a cascade of sweet feelings and hurtful thoughts. Scheduled for 7 and 8 January, the show brings into full play Meng Jinghui’s unique scenic grasp, framed by smart visual effects in a geometric and minimalist three-dimensional setting.

One week later on January 14 and 15, the Small Auditorium will welcome back Wang Yabin, one of China’s most prolific contemporary choreographers, with World. This time the awarded creator presents a piece merging movement and spirituality, deconstructing an art she learned to master, exploring the contradictions and emotions in the minds of dancers like herself. Having started dancing at the early age of nine, Wang Yabin was trained in folk, ballet and contemporary dance. The recognition of her creative skills soon provided chances for collaborations with prestigious overseas choreographers and renowned institutions after which she gained international appraisal from critics and audiences alike. The choreographer is returning to Macao following the staging of Moon Opera, back in 2016. Complementing this show, CCM is hosting a workshop personally mentored by Wang Yabin. An opportunity for local dance practitioners to explore the choreographer’s scenic language and new ways to move on stage.

Tickets for both productions will be available from November 28 (Sunday) at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing Network outlets, available at different prices and subject to various discounts. The Centre keeps following the anti-epidemic guidelines issued by health authorities, taking up appropriate measures, requesting the audience to wear face masks, undergo body temperature checks and present a valid Health Code.
