Built in 1864, the Guia Lighthouse officially came into service on 24 September of the following year. It was the first modern lighthouse on the coast of China and its coordinates are also the geographic location of Macao on the World Map. The lighthouse is a column structure and has a total height of 15 metres, with a diameter of 7 metres at the base narrowing upwards to 5 metres. The interior of the lighthouse has three levels, connected by a spiral staircase leading to a large lantern at the top. The lighthouse was damaged by a typhoon in September 1874 and resumed its service on 29 June 1910 after restoration. It remains in operation today.
