The Belt and Road Cultural Talk Series — Samba and Dance

Jointly organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Institute for Social and Cultural Research of the Macau University of Science and Technology, the Talk Series on Belt and Road Culture — Samba and Dance will present two seminars for this year. With the ultimate goal to provide further insight into the Belt and Road culture, the talks, hosted by specialists in literature and culture of Portuguese-speaking countries, will focus on the topics about feminist literature in African and Brazilian literature, featuring Portuguese-speaking countries’ roles in the cultural exchange among the Belt and Road countries.

【Introduction】
Under the topic of feminist literature in Portuguese-speaking African countries, the seminar will focus on the most significant contemporary female authors in Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Guinea Bissau. By introducing their representative works, the speaker will explore in depth their roles and impacts in the history of Portuguese literature in Africa.

 

【About the Speaker】
Jin Xinyi, lecturer in the Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Hispanic and Portuguese Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University. Her courses include Portuguese Literature, Appreciation of Portuguese Literary Classics in Africa, Literature and Art, Chinese and Portuguese Translation. Her interests of studies focus on literature of Portuguese-speaking countries, comparative study between literature and arts, literature translation, and teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. She has translated into Chinese Plasticus maritimus, uma espécie invasora (translation edition published by Zhejiang Education Publishing House, 2021), Jorge de Sena's poetry collection Arte de Música (translation edition published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 2020), Mia Couto's full-length novel Terra Sonâmbula (translation edition published by Homeward Publishing, 2018), Schönberg, Stravinsky, Adorno, and Webern: a complicated psychological constellation (translation edition published in Philharmonic, Vol.10-12, 2017, SDX Joint Publishing Company), and Pilar's Travel Notebook (translation edition published by Guangxi Normal University Press, 2015), and more. She has also published a number of academic articles and review articles.

【Introduction】
Brazilian literature plays a significant role in the literary landscape of Latin America, and even that of the world. As the founder of many important book awards, such as Jabuti Award and Oceanos Prize, Brazil has always been active in the literary arena. This lecture gives an overview of the Brazilian literary landscape and its development by presenting important award-winning literary works in recent years.

 


【About the Speaker】
Previously teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University and George Washington University, Zhang Jianbo is currently Assistant Professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (now the Faculty of Hispanic and Portuguese Studies) at Beijing Foreign Studies University; a master’s degree in linguistics from the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities Faculty at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and a PhD in Literature (Translation) from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau.
His research focuses on medio-translatology, history of literature translation, and translation theory. He has taught the courses of Elementary Portuguese, Translation and Interpretation (for senior undergraduates), News Reading (for senior undergraduates) and Translation (for graduate students), including Interpretation, Business Translation, News Translation and Translation Theory.
