On 5th October, Macao embarked on the Macao International Music Festival’s roller coaster with a magnificent concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Next on the list is the St. Florian Boys’ Choir (today, 6/10, 8pm, St. Joseph’s Seminary Church), a display of Austrian vocal talents, and the brilliant Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet (tomorrow, 7/10, 8pm, Dom Pedro V Theatre).

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. presents a unique concert in its Educational Series, entitled “Flourishing Art”, to be held on 27 September, Saturday, at 8pm, at St. Dominic’s Church. The concert features the “Zur Namensfeier” Overture, Op. 115 by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Allegro from the Violin concerto in G major, No. 3, K.216 by Wolfgang A. Mozart, the Allegro Moderato from the Violin concerto in G minor, No. 1, Op. 26 by Max Bruch, Ave Maria, Op. 52, No. 6 by Franz Schubert (Arr. Doming Lam), “Spring” from Trittico Botticelliano by Ottorino Respighi and the Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 6 by Niccolò Paganini. The concert will be directed by renowned Conductor Li Xincao, who will share the stage with soloists Ning Feng, Su Fei Nga and Chan Chon.

The world of Chinese national folk art is rich and diverse, comprising numerous art genres and ingenious artisans. After hosting the Zhejiang Arts and Crafts Demonstrations and Workshops for almost a year, Lou Kau Mansion continues to exhibit the beauty of Chinese culture and art by presenting famous folk artists from Anhui Province. Over a three-month period they will demonstrate various examples of folk craft, including Bamboo Sculpture, Bronze Carving, Phoenix Painting, Paper Cutting, Nut Carving, Micro Woodcarving and Shadow Puppets, among other artistic curiosities.

Lü Jia, the new Conductor and Music Director of the Macao Orchestra, will make his grand entrance at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium this Saturday, 6 September (8pm), to direct the Concert “Passion for Opera” – the Gala Concert of the Orchestra’s 2008-09 Season – and thus establish himself once more as one of the most outstanding Asian conductors of his generation. Despite having devoted several years to the symphonic repertoire, Lü Jia’s true passion is none other than the opera, a music genre that will enliven the Cultural Centre on Saturday, and is certain to fascinate all music lovers.

In order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Macau Handover, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has chosen “Yesterday.Today.Tomorrow” as the theme for the 2009 Macao Annual Visual Arts Exhibition. All Macao artists are invited and encouraged to contribute with works of art, which are to be submitted from 25 to 28 September 2008 (Thursday to Sunday).

The curtain at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium will rise on 6 September, Saturday, at 8 p.m., to disclose the new Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra. In the Opening Concert of the 2008-2009 Season, Lü Jia will guide the Orchestra and the audience through a journey to the epic world of Italian opera.

Zhejiang Province is closer to us than we ever imagined. Arriving from the coastal region south of the Yangtze river, that among its myriad mountains and lakes hides the most extraordinary handicraft of all China, four new experts on the traditional arts of embroidery, dyeing and blue calico will be at the Lou Kau Mansion to display, present and demonstrate their talent until the end of August.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. promotes one more concert in the Macao Orchestra Chamber Music Series entitled “Romantique Française”, to be held on 12 July, Saturday, at 8pm, at Dom Pedro V Theatre. The concert features the Sonata for Cello and Piano by Claude Debussy (1862-1918), the String Quartet, op. 121 by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), the Sonata for Trumpet, French Horn and Trombone, op. 33 by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) and the String Quartet in F major by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937).
