The workshop will deconstruct classic soul songs to understand the vocal performance as well as different rhythm section patterns and executions. While there will be live demonstration from singers and band, we will especially look into the gospel voicing which is essential for powerful and raw 3-part (soprano, Alto and Tenor) vocal harmony arrangement. There will be an interactive section where everyone is invited to learn a simple chorus of a gospel tune in harmonies, and 5-10 volunteer will be invited to come join the choir on stage to fully participate and soaked into the spirit of joy! Besides vocal, we will look into the arrangement in terms of orchestration as well as music theory, the back bone of soul music, to gain the tools needed to re-arrange a well-known song or composing an original in this style.
Following the seminar, Ocean Walker the soul choir together with the band will perform a few songs where we will run different iconic soul classics as well as songs that fusion with soul and other popular genres such as rap, hip-hop, musical and pop.
Audience will then be fully informed on what to appreciate and pick out the iconic moments we talked about during the concert. They also will be asked to participate in clapping, hand raising and others to fully engaged in appreciating the music in this style.
An after-concert sharing will take place for the audience to leave comments and ask questions. The floor is also opened for all the performers to share their experience in joining this healing and stress-relieved community.
