Collection is a human, civilizational habit. Whatever the motivation, through the ages collectors have helped to preserve items with historical merit or value, passing them down for generations as a manifestation of the life, culture, aesthetics and spirit of different eras.

Rapid economic development and prosperity in China has spurred a trend for collectibles and a boom in the art market, resulting in more circulation channels, a rise in the number of collectors, and increasingly frequent exchanges. These help collectors to improve their knowledge, as collecting is not just an individual pursuit to fulfill one’s private desire to collecting, but also about sharing with the public, displaying or publishing valuable colectibles, as well as providing information to other art lovers. Collection just for collection’s sake, hoarding collectibles at home, has become obsolete.

In view of this, in October 2014 a group of like-minded collection enthusiasts founded a collectors’ society called Xing Wen Ya Hui. The society has an academic penchant, aiming to promote and increase the standard of art collection in Macao, while strengthening the academic exchange between local collectors and aficionados in neighbouring regions.

In cooperation with the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), Xing Wen Ya Hui marks its first ever event with the organising of Delights of the Spirit: Artworks from Hong Kong and Macao Private Collections. The exhibits are a critical selection from private collections of Hong Kong and Macao and through displaying such fine artworks, we hope to share with the public the charm of Chinese traditional art, showing that art serves first and foremost to offer spiritual fulfillment and delight, rather than merely being a merchandise, albeit valuable. We also hope to take this opportunity to encourage deeper exchanges and academic discussions between Hong Kong and Macao collectors.

On behalf of our society, I express my heartfelt thanks to collectors from Hong Kong as well as members of Xing Wen Ya Hui, for all their support and assistance in this successful co-organisation with MAM.
