Organised by the Macao Museum of Art, Dragon Strokes: Calligraphy by Scholars 2012 – an idea that emerged from arranging the Chinese calligraphy and painting symposium series – features the works of eight heavyweight experts from Chinese calligraphy and painting circles, namely Fu Shen, Yang Xin, Xue Yongnian, Xiao Ping, Cao Baolin, Huang Dun, Liu Yiwen and Bai Qianshen, who are not only accomplished academics but scholars experienced in practising Chinese calligraphy.

The exhibition is rich in content with a variety of exhibits, including works written in running script, regular script, seal script, clerical script, cursive script and mixed scripts, in both traditional and non-traditional styles. Of these works, many are poems, postscripts, essays and revision notes written by the scholars themselves. Each character in their works is a reflection of their intelligence, insight and talent internalised and accumulated over the years. Not only do these works showcase these eight scholars’ admirable achievements in Chinese painting and calligraphy, literature and learning but the elegant demeanour of their calligraphic works.
