Introduction:

Magnificence: Artworks of Chan Chi Vai features more than 100 pieces/sets of works by famous local artist Chan Chi Vai, ranging from calligraphy, Chinese painting, seal carving to watercolour.
A very versatile, cross-disciplinary artist, Chan is good at Chinese painting, including landscape, figure, flower-and-bird paintings. In calligraphy, he excels at running and cursive styles. Furthermore he also actively involves himself in creative activities in other artistic forms. Back in the 1960s he already started creative work in sketching and watercolour, among others.
By using painting to illustrate calligraphy and calligraphy to show painting, Chan Chi Vai’s artwork i s an integration of painting and calligraphy that fully demonstrates his insistency on Chinese tradition. His work well illustrates the artistic charm of Chinese literati painting, where painting and calligraphy are consubstantial.


About the author:

Chan Chi Vai is a Chinese painter and calligrapher who excels at calligraphy, landscape, figure, flower-and-bird paintings, seal carving as well as poetry. He is also good at sketching, watercolour and oil painting. He also teaches courses covering Chinese classics such as I-Ching, classical Chinese poetry reciting, calligraphy, painting, seal carving, as well as Chinese and Western painting techniques. Born in 1946 in Macao. In the 1960s he studied classical Chinese poetry and prose, calligraphy, seal carving, Chinese and Western painting and also sculpture under Zhou Gongli, Li Xinzhai, Guang Wanli, Yu Woyu, Luo Shuchong and Deng Fen. His style follows the schools of Gao Jianfu, Li Tiefu and Yu Youren. Since the 1970s he has been involved in interior design, architecture design as well as feng shui design. A former member of the 8th and 9th National Committee of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC), he is currently the president of the I-Ching Research Association and of the head of the committee of Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao.
