Professor Jao Tsung-I, who was born on 9th August 1917, is an outstanding Chinese historian, archaeologist, literary author, specialist in classics, educator, painter and calligrapher. He is both an academic scholar and a scholar of the arts, and, as an outstanding translator, is well versed in English, French, Japanese and German and the languages of India and Iraq; he is also knowledgeable in the research of ancient Sanskrit and the pictographs of Babylon.

Professor Jao has devoted himself to academic research in areas as diverse as literature, history, philosophy and arts for a long period of time and is profi cient in poetry, calligraphy, painting and music. Learned in Chinese and Western studies,
he has written many works and achieved much as the leading authority in Sinology.
His scholarly research encompasses Dunhuang studies, oracle bone inscriptions, ‘Chu Ci’ poems, religion and Overseas Chinese history. His works have been
compiled into a volume known as the ‘Collection of Jao Tsung-I’s Academic Works
in the 20th Century’ in 12 books with more than 10 million characters, comprising
some 60 academic works and over 400 dissertations.
