The L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love), which is one of the most popular operatic comedies in the western opera history, actually came from the opera composer Gaetano Donizetti, who had took on the task at a critical moment. Aged only 34, the emerging composer finished the work in less than a month. Although it might not be, as legend had it, completed within eight days, this lighthearted, amusing opera with its mesmerising melody caught extensive attention overnight and has since enjoyed lasting popularity remaining a hit to this very day.
As a leading composer of bel canto operas along with Rossini and Bellini, Donizetti created a number of famous and beautiful arias for L'Elisir d'Amore, such as Una Furtive Lagrima and Quanto e' bella, quanto e' cara, that utterly captured the sweetness and bitterness of love. The speaker will lead the audience into the wonderful thoughts on the music of the opera while listening to it, telling the fascinating operatic story and talking about how the composer created the classic piece for a better appreciation of the appealing L'Elisir d'Amore.
