Guo Yazhi, Suona, Vocal, Erguxian and Wind Music
Hailed as the “best ever suona player”, Guo is a suona performer who masters multiple instruments. He graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1990 and was invited to stay as a lecturer. In 1999, he became the Suona Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In 2012, he furthered his jazz studies in Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

In 1993, his invention of the “Flexible Core of the Suona”, enabling previously impossible mode changing and performance of accidentals by traditional suona, won the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. In 1998, he received the Pro Musicis International Award in the United States. and was selected as one of the Most Excellent Musician in China. In 2013, he received the Award for Best Artist (Music) in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2012. Guo often cooperates with orchestras and Chinese orchestras from around the world as soloist, having premiered modern suona concertos such as Calling the Wind, Trace IV, and The Great Desert and the Yellow River.

Remarks

  • Online and telephone registrations for the Outreach Programmes will be opened from 6th August at 9 a.m. till the day before the respective activity dates except for those events with a specific deadline for applications stated.
  • The organizer reserves the right to alter activities and instructors.
  • Most of the activities are free admission except for those with a fee is expressly set. Registration is required.
  • Due to limited availability, participants who are absent without notice will be put on waiting list for the Outreach Programme activities of the next edition of the Macao International Music Festival.
  • Activities will be photographed or videotaped by IC staff for archival or evaluation purposes. Some of the photographs may be used for promotion of similar activities without consent from the participants in advance.
  • In case of a discrepancy between the Portuguese/English versions of the Outreach Programme with the Chinese version, the Chinese version shall prevail.
