31st Macao International Music Festival outdoor opera reinterprets a tragic love story from Greek mythology

Date of publication: 20/09/2017

The 31st Macao International Music Festival (MIMF), organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, will present an open-air new production of the opera Orfeo ed Euridice by young artists from Israel on Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 October, at 8pm, at Mount Fortress, reinterpreting a poignant and legendary love story from Greek mythology. On the other hand, internationally renowned ensemble The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will bring a soul-stirring evening dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven on Friday, 20 October, at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Those interested should purchase tickets as soon as possible.

The innovative open-air co-production of opera Orfeo ed Euridice, by the 31st MIMF and the Israeli Opera, follows an outdoor production presented by the MIMF held in 1992. Among the many opera versions of Orfeo’ myth, Christoph Willibald Gluck’s work from the 18th century, is considered to be one of the most important operas. A new interpretation of the opera’s story and an avant-garde wardrobe overturn conventional opera. The audience will be able to experience the dramatic effects of an outdoor opera and of this tragic love story from Greek mythology.

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen established its reputation in international music circles for its exceptional sound, exquisite performance skills and unique style of interpretation. On the occasion of the 190th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, the ensemble, under the baton of renowned conductor Paavo Järvi, presents the dramatic Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, the classical Symphony No. 1 and the romantic Symphony No. 3, providing a soul-stirring evening dedicated to the German composer.

Tickets for the 31st MIMF are limited and all members of the public interested are advised to purchase tickets as soon as possible.

The 31st MIMF Outreach Programme takes all interested parties to the “Backstage Tours of Giordano’s opera in four acts Andrea Chénier”, allowing the public to perceive the production’s sets as well as to appreciate closely the wardrobe, hair accessories and other props, inspired in the period of the French Revolution. In the talks of the community activities “Classical Music With Innovative Ideas - Ka-Jeng Wong’s Music Promotion Experiment”, “The Vanished Promise to Digital Music and the Practice of Creating One’s Own Music” and “When Cinema Meets Music”, various professional musicians are invited to explore different music topics.
