Charles Gounod created the most famous operatic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet. In this retelling of the story, two families in Verona, the Capulets and the Montagues, are bitter enemies. Conflict ensues when Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love. After the two exchange vows, a fight ensues between the Montagues and the Capulets in which Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, is killed by Count Capulet’s nephew, Tybalt. Distraught over the loss of his friend, Romeo turns the sword on Tybalt and murders him. As a result, Romeo is forced into exile. Then, in order to avoid marrying Paris, the man Juliet’s father wants her to marry, Juliet takes a sleeping potion given to her by the Friar so as to pretend she is dead. In the gloomy tomb, Romeo soliloquises on his beloved Juliet, whom he believes dead. In despair he takes poison, only to see her awaken. They hail a new life, but Romeo soon falters. He bids farewell to the frantic girl, who grasps his dagger and stabs herself.

Sung in French, with Chinese, Portuguese and English surtitles.
