In the Spring of 2011, a great deal of excitement and public interest arose around the Macao Arts Festival show Encounters: Audiovisual Mapping on the Ruins of St. Paul’s. The large-scale artistic spectacle, created by Spain’s Telenoika Audiovisual Open Creative Community, was received with unprecedented enthusiasm. Popular demand for more of this new art form inspired the Cultural Affairs Bureau to produce an equally well-received second run of the show that summer.

Last year, the Arts Festival had the honour and pleasure of inviting the creators of Encounters back to Macao once again, this time to offer three intensive Mapping Workshops at iCentre, a professional continuing studies facility in Macao, during the autumn and winter months. Having completed these workshops, the course graduates designed their own audiovisual architectural mapping works and will present Mapping: Made in Macao I and II to the local community as part of this year’s Macao Arts Festival.

Audiovisual Mapping on Tap Seac Square
This show is based on the visual elements “Point, Line and Shape” and their relationship to sound. The music is divided into three modes: rhythmic electronic music, melodic minimalism and sound effects. The complex audio-visual textures create a feeling of space and thickness. The visual effects explore two, three and even four dimensions, creating a playground for the imagination defined by the structure of the building.

Audiovisual Mapping on the Mandarin’s House
This show, designed for the façade of the Yuqing Mansion at the Mandarin’s House, is divided into four chapters: “The Origin”, “Golden Period”, “Degradation” and “Renovation”. Through sound and images, audiences will experience for themselves various incidents that took place in The Mandarin’s House, in chronological order, in addition to traces of the life of the House’s former owner, Zheng Guanying.
