Suzhou Pingtan, also known as shuoshu, is a towering art form within traditional Chinese culture. It consists of two forms: the exuberant pinghua and the discreet and tender tanci. Pingtan is sung in Wu dialect, extolled as “the tender speech of Wu” for its soft, light and flowing character.

Pingtan topics range from historical events and heroic tales to stories of love and hate among the men and women of nobility. Even without understanding the Wu dialect of Suzhou, audiences will be enchanted and touched by the serene verses and exquisite tunes of this traditional art form.

Such Pingtan celebrities as Jiang Yongchun, Zhang Jianzhen and Wang Jianzhong have been invited to give masterful performances of a variety of famous songs. This exquisite bud of Southern Chinese art will blossom at the Macao Arts Festival!
