The sets of The Circus Has Arrived evoke the atmosphere of Paris’ famous Cabaret du Chat Noir and the golden era of shadow puppet theatre in Montmartre. Complete darkness creates a seamless intimacy between public, shadows and performer. The curtain rises. A circus of shadows is coming, and everything becomes possible…. Shadows and light jump and play together, hopping upon musical notes and the tinkling of bells to spin us a wordless yarn full of fun.

Paulo Ferreira, encouraged by his first experiences with shadow theatre in the shows La vie de Guesar de Ling (France, 1984) and Le Rossignol et l’Empereur (Belgium, 1987), created the company Clair de Lune in 1990 with the collaboration of Paula Santos, Jesus Álvarez and Alfredo Boniquet. Inspired by the work of Lotte Reiniger, famed director of animated silhouette films, Paulo Ferreira always strives to imbue his shadow theatre with the magic of her stories. He considers Reiniger his “Shadow Master”.
