Cantonese Opera originated in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi during the Jiajing Period of the Ming Dynasty (1521-1567). This integrated performing art, blending singing, acting, recitation, martial arts, musical accompaniment and theatrical costumes, is beloved by the Cantonese-speaking community. Since 2009, when Cantonese Opera was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the three regions of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao have undertaken special new measures to ensure the preservation and promotion of the art form.

This annual Macao Arts Festival event gathers famous performers from Macao’s Cantonese Opera circles. In full make-up and costume, they sing and emote on the stage, touching the hearts of audiences with their professional and exquisite movements.

This is the ideal opportunity to experience the timeless elegance of this artistic item of Intangible Cultural World Heritage in all its splendour.
