In order to facilitate publishers’ fulfilment of the Legal Deposit obligations, the Macao Public Library, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, provides an additional collection point for Legal Deposit from today, located at the Taipa Library.
In order to preserve local bibliographic materials, a legal deposit requirement is placed by national and regional authorities. It is required that publishers submit a certain number of copies of their publications (including audiovisual and electronic materials) to the National Library, where these materials covering precious local culture, memories and history will be permanently archived. This is known as the Legal Deposit system. As the repository of the Legal Deposit for Macao’s publications, the Macao Public Library undertakes the responsibility of collecting, preserving and organizing local publications as well as making them available for research and other purposes. For publishers, this complimentary service allows local publications to be archived properly, and therefore their efforts can be permanently and systematically retained; they can also use the Macao Public Library as a platform to make their publications more accessible. On the other hand, international readers can also access local publications through the online library catalogue. This measure thus facilitates the promotion of publications.
Publishers can submit their publications in person or by post, indicating “Legal Deposit” for identification purposes. The postage is waived if the publication weight is under two kilograms, but the package must bear the indication “Macao Public Library Legal Deposit”.
