Exhibition of the Macao Archives “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)”

A ceremony marking the opening of exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” presented by the Macao Archives under the auspices of Cultural Affairs Bureau as well as the launching of publication “Diáspora Macaense – Territórios, Itinerários e Processos de Integração (1936-1995)” edited by Alfredo Gomes Dias was successfully held in the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon on 11 October 2016.

The ceremony was officiated by Luís Filipe Barreto, President of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre; Lau Fong, representative of the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao S.A.R. Government and Director of the Macao Archives; and Alfredo Gomes Dias, Associate Professor of the Lisbon College of Education and Researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon. The ceremony was also graced by over 80 guests including José Eduardo Garcia Leandro, former Governor of Macao; Gabriela Pombas Cabelo, former President of the Cultural Institute of Macao; Jorge Rangel, President of the International Institute of Macau; Ana Paula Laborinho, President of Camões Institute; Silvestre de Almeida Lacerda, General Director for Book, Archives and Libraries of Portugal; representative of the Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Guimarães; Director of the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives of the Municipality of Guimarães; Chief of Arquivo Histórico da Marinha (Historical Marine Archives) of Portugal; archivists and researchers.

The exhibition is a continuation of “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” staged in the Macao Archives in 2015. It showcases a selection of over one hundred records to illustrate the historical background of the Macanese diaspora around the world, the social inclusion of Macanese in Shanghai, the journey of Portuguese refugees to Macao and the aid they received in Macao, as well as the documentation and materials on one of the Shanghai Portuguese refugees Clementina Fernandes.

The exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” is held from today until 29 January 2017 at the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon. The Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre is a public institute of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal. Founded in late 1990, it conducts research and cooperation projects focused on international and intercultural relations between China, Macao, East Asia and Euro-Asia. The Centre is composed of the following units, namely the Division of Documentation, Research and Scientific Cooperation; Division of Museum Studies, Training and Interactive Technologies; and Section of Technical and Administrative Support. In addition, the exhibition will then extend to Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives of the Municipality of Guimarães for continuing display from 3 March to 1 September 2017. It is a manifestation of the friendly cooperation and resources sharing between the cultural institutions in Macao and Portugal and a new impulse to Chinese and Portuguese cultural exchange.
