National Dance Company of Spain returns to CCM
Carmen: Contemporary dance with Spanish flair

Date of publication: 24/08/2016
Type: Dance

The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents Carmen, an intense dance adaptation of Bizet’s operatic masterpiece by National Dance Company of Spain (CND).

CND is returning to CCM’s Grand Auditorium, this time guided by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger, who is bringing a pure, uncontaminated view of a classic production conceived for dance and music lovers alike. Blending the original score with additional contemporary music, Inger’s piece is constructed from the point of view of a young boy.

Based on oneof the most successful operas ever produced, Carmen’s plot revolves around a love triangle composed by Don José, the main prison guard, sexy Carmen and the Toreador, who in this version is portrayed more as a pop star.

Removed from the stereotypes usually associated with the story, Johan Inger’s Carmen is a sober, contemporary version choreographed with a subtle proximity with the 1960’s. Theatrical and dramatic, this production earned him the Benois de la Danse prize in 2016.

Founded in 1979, the CND is a world class dance company built on a vast repertoire created by a string of renowned artistic directors and choreographers, such as Nacho Duato, who took over its directorship for more than 20 years. Currently led by artistic director and former principal dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet, Jose Carlos Martinez, the company displays a versatile, skilful cast and a creative team.

Carmen’s tale of jealousy and desire is presented by CCM on November 4, 2016 (Fri) at the Grand Auditorium. Tickets will be on sale from August 28 (Sunday), available at various prices and discounts at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing outlets.
