The 27th Macao Arts Festival (MAF), organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), under the theme “Time” and the slogan “Reshape your Imagination. Experience the Spirit of the Times”, presents the Mullova and the Macao Orchestra concerts, on 22 May (Sunday), at 8 p.m., at the Macao Cultural Centre - Grand Auditorium, and Coppia, with Manuela Azevedo, Hélder Gonçalves and Victor Hugo Pontes (Portugal), on 27 and 28 May (Friday and Saturday), at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, at the Sands Theatre, Sands® Macao.

Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova requires no introduction. Winner of the first prize at the 1980 International Jean Sibelius International Violin Competition and winner of the Gold Medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition, Mullova, for her debut with the Macao Orchestra (OM), will play Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, op. 77, in which the composer represented himself with the famous “DSCH” motif. In this concert, the OM will also perform Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, op. 47, a largely grave, sombre and sad work, composed as “A Soviet Artist’s Practical Creative Reply to Just Criticism” and which can be seen as the watershed in the composer’s career.

The staged concert Coppia is a joint venture between Manuela Azevedo, lead singer of renowned Portuguese pop band Clã, Hélder Gonçalves, in charge of the musical direction, and Victor Hugo Pontes, in charge of the stage direction and set design. In this show, Manuela Azevedo explores all the possibilities of expression implied by the word coppia - pair, double, amorous/ professional/ artistic couple - using as a starting point songs by David Byrne, Sérgio Godinho, Gilberto Gil, Sonny & Cher, Clã and others. This is the central idea of Coppia, in which “dance and music play in a tennis court”. The show associates the music that the lead singer of Clã likes to make with dance, providing an opportunity to deepen collaboration with choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes, who has served as the stage director of several concerts and music videos by Clã. The concert venue is sponsored by Sands Macao.
