Introduction
To establish ‘a base for exchange and cooperation with Chinese culture as the mainstream and the coexistence of different cultures’, and promote and strengthen the cultural and artistic exchange between China and Portugal, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre of Portugal have jointly organised Journeys of Light: Macao Landscape Watercolours from the MAM Collection in Lisbon. The show allows Macao artists to observe and exchange ideas with their Portuguese peers through watercolour paintings. It also reveals Macao’s architecture and street sceneries that reflect a blend of Chinese and Western influences to the Portuguese audience.
The exhibition displays 50 artworks from the MAM collection by 17 Macao veteran and emerging artists. Dedicated to Macao’s cultural landscapes and street sceneries, the show features various styles, presenting the development of local watercolours since the 1970s from different perspectives while also showcasing Macao’s transformation from a historical city into an international tourist and leisure destination through flowing yet transparent brushstrokes and rich layers.
