LOVE IS FLEETING AS TIME
Zuni Icosahedron’s multimedia play Eighteen Springs celebrates the collaboration of director/designer Mathias Woo, Golden Horse Best Adapted Screenplay winner Jimmy Ngai, music director Yu Yat-yiu@PMPS, renowned actress singer Elaine Jin and tanci master Jin Lisheng.
Adapted from Eileen Chang’s homonym novel, the play Eighteen Springs, re-ran in Hong Kong in 2013 following the successes of its 2012 debut and showing in Singapore’s Huayi Chinese Festival of Arts 2013, highlights the challenge of conveying the emotions of the characters without the original monologues in the novel.
“We make new attempts this time. Now the whole performance focuses on the 7 men and women, wiping off the other insignificant characters,” says director Mathias Woo on the adaptation. Elaine Jin assumes the role of the storyteller with her singing, which integrates the emotional flow of the story. In addition to the subtle acting of performers from the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, Eighteen Springs features tanci performance by Suzhou pingtan artists Jin Lisheng and Yu Qun. Tanci, the traditional Wu-dialect storytelling, is instrumental in delivering the inner feelings of the characters.
