Planning to recapture Jingzhou City, the commander-inchief of Eastern Wu, Zhou Yu, conspires to lure Governor Liu Bei to Jiangdong with a honey trap and hold him hostage in exchange for Jingzhou. The ruse is uncovered by Liu Bei’s counsellor, Kong Ming, who plays along with Zhou’s conspiracy and then turns the tables on him. Thus, Zhou suffers a humiliating loss, becoming so angry that he falls ill.

Zhou Yu’s wife, Xiao Qiao, pleads with him to form an alliance with Liu Bei against Cao Cao, a common enemy, to avoid becoming a foe of Kong Ming. Zhou pretends to take his wife’s advice, telling her he will attack a different city, when, in reality, he is preparing another attempt to conquer Jingzhou. However, the conspiracy is once again discovered by Kong Ming, who orders his men to protect Jingzhou at all cost, inflicting on Zhou You yet another blow. Attempting to conquer Jingzhou for the third time, Kong Ming’s men, led by Zhang Fei, hand Zhou yet another defeat in the Battle of the Reed Marches. Young and impulsive, Zhou Yu cannot bear the threefold loss. He curses the heavens for bringing him into the world at the same time as Kong Ming and then dies of rage.
