The Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne traces its origins to 1827, when a group of Cologne’s citizens sponsored the creation of the Kölner Concert-Gesellschaft (Cologne Concert Society) in order to present Gesellschaftskonzerte (Society concerts). From 1857 on, these concerts took place in a hall named the Gürzenich, which became the orchestra’s namesake. The time-honoured hall would later host the world premieres of numerous famous works including Brahms’ Double Concerto and Mahler’s 5th Symphony. In 1986, the orchestra took up residence at the Kölner Philharmonie. It also performs in operatic productions at the Cologne Opera.

Duration: approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including one interval
