Eli Marshall (b. 1977)
“Longing for the Present” for Tenor and Orchestra (World Premiere)

This concert features two world premieres specially commissioned by the Macao International Music Festival. Renowned Macao composer Lam Bun Ching's work for piano and orchestra, “Saudades de Macau II", is a sequel to an earlier work of the same title which is well known to the Macao public. American young composer Eli Marshal's new cantata for tenor and orchestra draws inspiration from the Catholic liturgy with excerpts from the Latin journals of Matteo Ricci and, interspersed amongst his private ruminations, other, more recent, voices of foreigners from the West, creating a mystical moving portrait of cultures interacting over the ages.
