Date of publication: 05/05/2016
Type: Macao Arts Festival

Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the 27th Macao Arts Festival presents several outstanding dance, theatre and music performances this weekend, catering to the different tastes of the audience.

The ground-breaking production The Fairy Tales from the World of Chaos, by the Breakthrough Association, a sequel of The Bizarre Fairy Tales presented in 2015, to be held on 6 and 7 May, deals with serious issues concerning society and humanity in a fairy tale context, assembling talents from Macao’s literary, theatrical and musical circles in order to generate new artistic momentum with innovative composition. The Assembly of Animals by Tim Spooner, to be held from 5 to 8 May,  is a show in which the performers reorganise and animate an array of ingeniously constructed “animals” of very different sizes and forms. After the performance, the audience is invited to explore the objects more closely. Le Patin Libre, the world’s first and only contemporary ice skating company, makes its debut in Asia with Glide on 7 and 8 May, at 1pm and 8pm, at the Future Bright Ice Rink, revealing the creativity behind this new emerging art form of contemporary ice skating. Admission is free.

Traditional arts continue to shine in this Festival. Renowned Macao Cantonese opera artist Chu Chan Wa and other local Cantonese opera artists present the popular Cantonese Opera The Legend of the Purple Hairpin. The Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group returns to the MAF stage with the play A Tea for a Dream, continuing to portray themes with humour, reflecting aspects of life in Macao and providing the audience with food for thought. The Legend of the Purple Hairpin and A Tea for a Dream both take to the stage on 7 and 8 May (Saturday and Sunday), revealing the charm of Macao’s intangible cultural heritage. Only a few tickets are available for some of the performances and those interested should purchase their tickets as soon as possible.
