The 28th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) Outreach Programme offers 26 activities, divided into 9 categories including talks, pre-performance talks, workshops, master classes, sharing sessions, backstage tours, children’s corner, community promotion activities and scholastic programmes, breaking concert halls and stage barriers and getting into the communities to further develop Macao residents’ musical taste.
This year, the MIMF carries on its dedication to the training of local music talents and to the establishment of an exchange platform with world renowned musicians. Therefore, it collaborates once again with jazz master Zé Eduardo and his band by organizing jazz workshops comprising beginners’, elementary and advanced courses. All workshop participants will have the opportunity to participate in the “Music Sharing Session” to be held on August 30, revealing to the audience the results of this learning experience. The Festival also invites jazz experts from the cross straits region to taste coffee and discuss music with aficionados of this genre during Café Jazz Days.
The violin and cello master class by the duo parnas sisters, young American violinist Madalyn Parnas and cellist Cicely Parnas, is designed to teach violin and cello students on an individual basis, share experiences and demonstrate the playing skills of a string duo. Interested parties are encouraged to form a string duo to receive special guidance. American group Anonymous 4 will share their experience in singing classical and traditional religious music and the skills of a cappella singing in a master class designed for participants over 12 years of age with singing experience. In order to allow the public to analyse different types of music using accessible language, the MIMF has invited academics, critics and composers from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau to give talks on music related topics. Guest speakers include Victor Pang, Artistic Director of theatre company Actors’ Family (Hong Kong); Leon Ko, composer for musical theatre and cinema (Hong Kong); Leung Hio Ming, experienced musician (Macao); Kung Chi Shing, composer (Hong Kong); Yang Yandi, Vice-President of the Shanghai Music Conservatory (Mainland China); Chow Fan Fu, music critic (Hong Kong). Talks cover different genres, from mediaeval music, opera, multimedia experimental music to Broadway musicals. Participants in three or more lectures can receive a free ticket for the opera Norma or Hairspray – The Musical.
Internationally acclaimed icon of avant-garde contemporary music, Laurie Anderson participates in a sharing session with the public, in order to share her creative ideas and performance anecdotes, while ensemble Canadian Brass humorously shows different styles to play brass instruments. Additionally, the many pre-performance talks allow the public to have an ever more immersive musical experience. The MIMF also organizes backstage tours to the opera Norma and the musical Hairspray, giving the audience a glimpse of what’s behind the stage. The Children’s Musical Drama Workshop allows participants to understand musical drama through body language and games. At the end of the workshop, the younger ones will watchHairspray - The Musical with the instructors.
In order to encourage students to enter performance halls, promotion activities will be held in schools, who can register to watch Hairspray’s public rehearsal. The Festival further seeks to bring music to different neighbourhoods and communities, As such, the Macao Kaifong Cantonese Opera Juvenile Troupe will perform in nursing homes and hospital wards in Macao.
