Rules & Regulations

 

1. Objectives

  1. This scholarship seeks to perpetuate and inculcate the art of music, enabling local gifted musicians to develop their talent and promote the cultural endeavours of the Macao people.
  2. It seeks to provide an opportunity and financial support for distinguished local musical talent who aspire to becoming a professional soloist in the future to study in a world-renowned conservatory.

 

2. Competition Dates

  • First Round: Monday 21st to Friday 25th May 2012
  • Semi-final: Monday 23rd & Tuesday 24th July 2012
  • Final: Sunday 29th July 2012

 

3. Competition Venue

Semi-final & Final: Dom Pedro V Theatre

 

4. Eligibility

Holders of valid Macao ID card born in or after 1987.

 

5. Competition Stages & Music Requirements

  1. The Competition is divided into three stages: First Round, Semi-final and Final:
    • First Round
      Video Submission; each participant must perform two pieces from different periods or of different genre of their own selection. The grade level of these pieces should not be lower than the ABRSM Grade 8, or the Beijing Central Conservatory Practical Examination Grade 9. The total length of these pieces may not exceed 15 minutes and each participant must record their live performance of these two pieces in DVD format (PAL) (Please refer to Item 6.3, Point c). Adjudicators will select from submitted recordings no more than 10 participants to enter the Semi Final.
    • Semi-final
      Live Performance; each participant must perform one compulsory piece designated by the Organiser(s) and at least two pieces of the participant’s own selection, the style of which must differ from that of the First Round, with one of them a large musical composition. The total length of all these pieces may not exceed 25 minutes. Adjudicators will select no fewer than the 3 best participants to enter the Final.
    • Final
      The finalists must perform live the compulsory piece performed in the Semi-final, and a complete concert piece, including one complete large music composition. The total length of all these pieces shall not exceed 40 minutes.
  2. Participants are required to perform by memory in all stages.
  3. Participants are required to prepare all their own musical pieces.
  4. All Semi-final and Final participants are required to submit their selected musical pieces 30 days prior to the competition. The Organiser(s) reserve(s) the right to require participants to submit copies of music scores.

 

6. Registration

  1. Rules & Regulations and Registration Form can be downloaded from the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s website at www.icm.gov.mo
  2. Participants must submit Registration Form and related materials for the competition to the Cultural Affairs Bureau Building, located at Praça do Tap Siac, during the office hours of 9:00am to 5:30 pm, on or before 23rd May 2012. For enquiries, please call (853) 8399 6608. Submissions can be made in person, by entrusting someone or by post (submissions subject to postmark deadline).
  3. Participants are required to submit the following information:
    • Registration Form
    • One copy of valid Macao ID card and two recent 1.5” colour photos of the participant
    • Unedited video recording not exceeding 15 minutes performed live by the participant, showing clearly the participant in DVD format (PAL)
    • List of musical pieces of the participants’ selection for the First Round
    • Incomplete Registration Form or failure to submit all required information listed above will render application void.
  4. The Organiser(s) will announce the list of participants selected for the Semi-final on or before 31st May 2012 via the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s website.
  5. Results of Semi-final and Final will be announced on the days of competition.
  6. No information or materials submitted for Registration will be returned.

 

7. Competition Rules

  1. Participants must perform the compulsory piece and self-selected pieces as stated on the Registration Form.
  2. It is not necessary to repeat the competition pieces or portions, or the first coda. However, if the musical score is marked da capo (D.C.) or dal segno (D.S.), participants are required to perform as directed.
  3. On the days of competition, participants are required to report their presence to staff at the venue reception and present their original Macao ID card for verification.
  4. Participants are required to arrive at the competition venue 15 minutes prior to the competition. Latecomers will be considered to have withdrawn from the competition.
  5. It is the participants’ responsibility to calculate the time required to return to the competition venue should they need to leave once registering. If a participant does not appear on stage upon the MC’s announcement, he or she shall be considered to have withdrawn from the competition.
  6. Adjudicators reserve the right to request participants to discontinue their performance if they consider they have enough grounds to make a decision.
  7. Participants are required to arrange their own accompanist(s) for their concerto in the competition.
  8. During the competition, participants, their teachers, relatives, friends and agents are not permitted to communicate or speak to adjudicators. Participants who violate this rule shall be disqualified from the competition.
  9. Participants are required to inform the Organiser(s) if they have blood, teacher-student, and/or business relationship with any adjudicators prior to the competition and shall not be scored by the relevant adjudicator(s). If such relationship is not reported, the Organiser(s) reserve(s) the right to disqualify the relevant participant(s) from the competition, with related award(s) and prize(s) forfeited.
  10. Participants are required to follow all rules and regulations set by the Organiser(s).
  11. Decisions made by adjudicators are final.

 

8. Adjudicators

  1. Yundi Li, young world-renowned pianist
  2. Lü Jia, Musical Director & Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra
  3. Peng Jia Peng, Musical Director & Principal Conductor of the Macao Chinese Orchestra
  4. Various famous musicians from the Mainland and/or overseas

 

9. Prize

Melco Crown Entertainment - Yundi Scholarship: an amount of up to MOP1,000,000 for the winner to study in a world-renowned conservatory.

 

10. Other

  1. All audio visual copyright of the competition belongs to the Organiser(s).
  2. The order of the participants’ performance shall be determined by draws conducted by the Organiser(s) and may not be objected to by participants.
  3. In the event that a participant requires the order of his or her performance to be changed, the Organiser(s) must first consent to such change.
  4. Organiser(s) reserve(s) the right to amend all details of the competition and asserts right of final interpretation and decision regarding competition.

 

(In the event of any conflict or discrepancy between the Chinese and English versions, the Chinese version shall prevail and be treated as the correct version.)
