Competition Rules

Competition Rules

1. Competitors may compete in no more than four competition categories, and must choose only one competition level in each category;

2. When a Solo category includes several instruments (for example, Woodwind Solo: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, and Bassoon – Advanced Level), competitors may choose only one instrument to compete;

3. In Chamber Music, Ensemble, and Vocal Ensemble categories, competitors may not participate in more than one team per category;

4. According to the number of inscriptions, the Organiser reserves the right to divide or combine categories. The result of this adjustment shall be published on the Cultural Affairs Bureau website on 1st June 2012. Competitors shall raise no objection.

5. Competitors may compete only in categories that correspond to their level of musical ability;

5.1 Competitors who have registered in the Concerto category may not also compete at the Elementary or Intermediate Level for the same instrument;

5.2 If Organiser discovers that competitor’s level of ability does not correspond to the categories for which s/he has registered, it reserves the right to disqualify that competitor from the categories in question;

6. Competitors who have won first prize in any solo instrument category in past Macao Young Musicians Competitions shall not be eligible to compete in that category;

7. Full-time professional musicians and full-time students of music performance (related instrument or vocal) in music academies are not eligible to compete;

8. If competitors need to change the registered category or level due to special circumstances, competitors must make the request within the registration period, 15thto 20thMarch 2012, can change only once. Late submission will not be accepted;

9. Once registration is completed,

9.1 The registration fee is non-refundable;

9.2 Competitors in Solo categories may not make any substitutions in personnel;

9.3 Should individual members of any team registered for the Chamber Music, Ensemble or Vocal Ensemble categories find themselves unable to participate due to special circumstances, a substitution may be requested. This team member must fill out and sign Form D and provide proof of the reason for his/her inability to perform (such as a note from his/her school or doctor) as well as a photocopy of the new team member’s valid Macao resident ID card;

9.4 Competitors who need to change the free choice piece or update their personal information must fill out Form D and submit a photocopy of the new free choice piece, clearly marked with the competitor’s full name and competition category;

9.5 To protect the personal interests of the competitors, Form D must be filled out and signed by the competitor who applies for change or by his/her legal guardian, and be submitted on or before the date specified below. When submitting the form, the applicant has to present the ID card of the competitor. Late submissions will not be accepted;

10. The order of performance will be determined by computer random drawing and announced on 1st June 2012. Competitors can consult the schedule online or at the Cultural Affairs Bureau (Praça do Tap Seac, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. including lunch hour, Monday to Friday);

11. Competitors must perform in the specified order:

11.1. Competitors who have reason to change the order of performance must complete and submit Form D, along with supporting documentation (such as a doctor’s note or letter from school). To protect the personal interests of the competitors, application must be filled out and signed by the competitor who applies for change or by his/her legal guardian. When submitting the form, the applicant has to present the ID card of the competitor;

11.2 The order of performance may be altered only under exceptional circumstances and with the consent of the Organiser. The result and the new order of performance will be notified by phone;

12. On the day of competition, Competitors must report to the on-site Registration Desk on time, present their valid Macao Resident ID Card and get a number card;

13. Competitors who fail to get the number card on time at the on-site Registration Desk will be considered LATE. Latecomers will be allowed to perform on stage, but ineligible to compete for any prizes; the judges will give the competitor a written assessment but will not award a score;

14. Competitors may leave the venue temporarily after reporting to the Registration Desk, but must return before their performance time. Those who fail to return to the venue by the time the MC announces their name to perform on stage will be considered to have withdrawn from the competition, and not permitted to perform on stage;

15. All scoring decisions made by the judges are final;

16. The judges may require a competitor to repeat a performance if they feel that they have not been able to make a fair assessment based on the original performance;

17. The judges may require a competitor to terminate a performance if it exceeds the time limit or if they feel that they have heard enough to assess the performance;

18. Competitors in the Concerto category are required to arrange their own accompaniment. In the event that the accompanist(s) is/are absent at the scheduled time of performance, the judges will give the competitor a written assessment but will not award a score;

19. Competitors, their teachers, relatives or representatives may not speak with or otherwise have contact with the judges during the course of the competition. If they do, the competitors will be immediately disqualified;

20. If any competitor is a relative, a student, or business associate of any of the judges, the competitor must notify the Organiser before the start of the competition so that the judge in question will not score the competitor in that category. The Organiser reserves the right to disqualify the competitor from the competition or strip the competitor of any prizes s/he has won if it is discovered that the competitor has concealed such a relationship with a judge;

21. Each category must have a minimum enrolment of FIVE competitors or teams in order to compete for prizes;

21.1 In the event that a category is under-enrolled, competitors may still perform on stage. The judges will provide a written assessment and a score, but competitors may not compete for First, Second or Third Prize. If the competitor’s performance is truly outstanding, judges may recommend him or her to compete for the Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize, the Talented Prize or the Best Ensemble Performance Prize, and s/he may be a candidate to perform at the Awards Ceremony and Winners’ Gala Concert;

22. The Organiser reserves the right to amend or rescind any regulation pertaining to the Competition, and reserves the right of final decision in case of uncertainty or dispute.
