The Exhibition “A Century of Posters”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, will be inaugurated at Tap Seac Gallery on 20 June, Friday, at 6:30pm.
The exhibition presents a total of 80 rare posters from the private collection of Dutch art collector Martijn F. Le Coultre. On show will be award-winning, vintage posters spanning one hundred years from the 1880s to the 1990s, hailing from Europe, America and Asia. It features a myriad of representative works of the development of poster design, including lithographs by Jules Chéret (1836-1932), the so-called “roi de l‘affiche” (king of the poster) and by Alfons Maria Mucha, a pivotal figure of the Art Nouveau movement, and majestic pieces by such pioneering poster designers as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Leonetto Cappiello, Joost Schmidt and Raymond Savignac, among others. While appreciating this exhibition visitors will be able to feel the distinctively rich vibe of these works from very diverse origins and epochs. Furthermore viewers will certainly feel overwhelmed by these highly successful achievements, only made possible through a combination of graphic design artistry and new printing technologies.
In order to deepen the public’s understanding of these precious works, the organizer has invited Martijn F. Le Coultre to give a lecture on the exhibits, not only introducing the posters on show but also sharing his long experience as an art collector. This lecture, conducted in English with Cantonese translation, will be held on 21 June, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at the Tap Seac Gallery. Seats are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations please call 8399 6699 during office hours until 20 June.
