The Cultural Institute will hold the 2005 Macao Annual Exhibition of Visual Art during the Macao Arts Festival (March 2005). The theme of the exhibition is “Macao’s Cultural Heritage—Beyond History.” Regulations were announced several months ago. Artists interested in joining the exhibition should submit their entries between October 29 and 31.

Since Macao’s return to Chinese administration in 1999, the Cultural Institute of the Macao SAR Government has held the Macao Annual Exhibition of Visual Art each year during the annual Macao Arts Festival. The four exhibitions that have been held to date have helped stimulate artistic expression and brought new talent to light, and have promoted arts education and raised artistic standards in Macao.

The theme of the exhibition is “Macao’s Cultural Heritage—Beyond History,” which reflects the organizer’s desire that artists employ the concept of cultural heritage broadly defined to conduct an artistic inquiry into contemporary issues concerning Macao’s culture as it moves into the future, thereby stimulating reflection on the direction of the development of the arts and culture in Macao.

The Institute will invite individuals representing different fields of expertise from various regions outside Macao to form the selection panel. The selection of entries will be held on November 11 and 12 in the Tap Seac Gallery and the process will be opened to the public. The selection panel will designate the ten most outstanding entries as the “Ten Best Entries” of the 2005 Annual Macao Exhibition of Visual Art. Artworks included in this “top ten” list will be recommended for inclusion in special exhibitions and to represent Macao in future overseas exhibitions and cultural events.

Each participant may submit a maximum of three entries (individual works or ensembles) in different visual media. Participants with entries related to installations and sculptures should submit a photo together with the application form between October 29 and 31 and have their works submitted directly to the Tap Seac Gallery on November 9 and 10.

Artists interested in joining the exhibition can submit their entries between October 29 and 31 to the Cultural Events Department (Visual Arts), Cultural Institute of the Macao SAR Government, Rua do Campo No. 78, Ed. Comercial Chong Kin, 8A.

Selected entries will be announced on the Macao Art Net: www.macauart.net on November 15. Entries will be returned to participants on November 16 and 17 in the Tap Seac Gallery. Regulations and application forms can be obtained from the Cultural Institute’s head office, Tap Seac Gallery and major bookstores in Macao, or download from the Cultural Institute’s website: www.icm.gov.mo. Any enquiries, please contact Ms. Lam or Ms. Ho of the Cultural Events Department (Visual Arts) at 335140, fax to 335143, or e-mail to av@icm.gov.mo.
