"A Gathering in Time and Space – The Historic Centre of Macao" exhibition

“The Historic Centre of Macao” has been officially listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. To celebrate this event, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government has organized “A Gathering in Time and Space – The Historic Centre of Macao” exhibition. An opening ceremony took place in the Tap Seac Gallery on July 22 at 3:30pm. The exhibition displays works of 38 local artists created to present the historic centre of Macao.

“The Historic Centre of Macao” has been approved officially by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and is now inscribed on the World Heritage List, raising the number of World Heritage Sites in China to 31. The good news was made known to Macao in the afternoon of July 15. Residents are delighted for such honour, which has proven that Macao’s historical progress of over 400 years is of world significance.

To celebrate and make know to the public the historical value of “The Historic Centre of Macao”, the Cultural Affairs Bureau is holding “A Gathering in Time and Space – The Historic Centre of Macao” exhibition from July 22 to September 20 in the Tap Seac Gallery. Edmond Ho Hau Wah, Chief Executive of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Xu Ze, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Wang Yong Xiang, Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry in the Macao S.A.R., Fernando Chui, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Zhang Bai, Deputy Director-General of the National Administration of Cultural Heritage, Lok Cheong, Cultural Counsel Commissioner, and Heidi Ho, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, attended the opening ceremony.

During the opening ceremony, an old map of the Historic Centre of Macao was displayed for the guests to disclose, one after another, images of Macao’s historic buildings of different characteristics and styles, showing that their elegant appearances were not diminished through time.

The Historic Centre of Macao possesses the oldest and most concentrated Chinese and Western buildings in China. It is also the place where Western religious culture is disseminated in China. Chinese and Portuguese have been living together on this piece of land for more than 400 years, developing life-styles with distinguished features. Many western artists who lived here has left behind many artworks and buildings in Chinese and Western styles. These arts possess profound influences towards artists nowadays.

With “The Historic Centre of Macao” as its theme, “A Gathering in Time and Space – The Historic Centre of Macao” exhibition will display 69 works from 38 local artists created recently for the application of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The exhibits include ink wash paintings, calligraphies, watercolour paintings, oil paintings, collages, block prints, photographs and posters. Models and photos of the cultural buildings in “The Historic Centre of Macao” will also be displayed. The exhibition’s audio-visual section actively brings audience to “The Historic Centre of Macao” in a video narrated in four languages including Cantonese, Portuguese, Mandarin and English.
