"China and the West" meet at the Tap Seac Gallery
8/3/2004 - 26/4/2004

“China and the West: Cultural Influence and Innovation - Visual Arts Exhibition” is one of the events of The 15th Macao Arts Festival, which starts on March 6. The exhibition will open one day later at the Tap Seac Gallery and will be on show until April.

A total of 198 art works by 117 local artists will be displayed in this exhibition, which consists of two distinct parts: Part I emphasizes on “tradition” and the depth of the mingling of Chinese and Western cultural influence. Part II focuses on “innovation” and reveals entirely new trends in local visual arts.

Featuring “tradition”, the Part I exhibition (from March 8 to 24) includes 99 pieces of works like watercolours, calligraphies, drawings, photography and sculptures, which expresses the uniqueness of Macau’s mixed culture and the innovative and creative spirit of local artists.

Another 99 pieces of exhibits will be featured in the Part II exhibition (from March 27 to April 26) at the same venue. The variety of works comprises the same forms of art of the previous show and installations, posters, videos and mixed media. This part will reveal the new artistic creation in Macau.

To complement the exhibition, a series of seminars and workshops are being prepared for students, families, and local artists, inspiring participants via appreciation and discussion about the exhibits in order to explore specialties and social culture of our residence.

According to the Culture Institute, these proposed activities encourage imagination and creativity, which will lead to group invention throughout elements like stimulation of vision, drama acting and guidance.

With the aid of various media and exhibits, workshop for the Part I exhibition provides art education for families and students from kindergarten, primary and junior secondary.

For the Part II exhibition, besides workshops, the Culture Institute and the Macau Polytechnic are going to organize a symposium on the opening day at the gallery. Fan Di’an, Apex Lin Pang Soong and Lee Ka-sing, renowned international artists and jurors of the exhibition, will present and discuss the theme “China and the West: Cultural Influence and Innovation”.

After the opening ceremony, there will be a light show on the outer walls of the Tap Seac Gallery, which will extend throughout the night the opening hours of the exhibition from March 8 to 14.
