Macao Horizons - An Exhibition of Contemporary Art
10/7/2006 - 5/11/2006

Goal:

The exhibition aims to foster the local production of contemporary art, to reveal and introduce artistic talent, and to encourage conceptual and technical innovation as a mode for reflection on, investigation into, and expression of the development of the arts and culture and related topics in Macao.

Introduction:

The Cultural Institute (herein under referred to as the ''organiser'') is currently organising Macao Horizons—An Exhibition of Contemporary Art, to be held in 2004. The theme ''Macao Horizons'' is intended to generate reflection on the manner in which culture in Macao combines a distinct local character with the influences of globalisation. This in turn is meant to stimulate inquiry into contemporary issues concerning Macao culture, and into possible future directions for the development of the arts in Macao.

This exhibition will feature a number of visual arts ensembles, each ensemble comprised of a series of works by a single artist. The ensembles of 7-8 artists will be selected from among the entries submitted on the basis of their distinctiveness, and will be exhibited at the Tap Seac Gallery during 2004-2005.

Guidelines for Participation:

1) Participants must be Macao residents or individuals legally residing in Macao;

2) Works submitted for consideration must have been produced specifically for this exhibition, and must not have been exhibited previously;

3) Entrants may employ different visual media in their works, and should be able to display the entire ensemble within an exhibition area of 20 to 30 square metres, or, for two-dimensional works, along an exhibition length of 20 to 30 metres (calculated by the width of each work in the ensemble);

4) The organiser also encourages curated submissions, in which several artworks by different artists, or which involve different artistic concepts or media, are submitted as a single piece.

Exhibit Requirements:

1) There is no restriction on the media that may be used; participants are free to choose the media they deem most suitable for their works;

2) There are no specific requirements regarding the size of entries, although it is preferable if the height of each piece does not exceed 2.5m (including mount);

3) Artists are responsible for ensuring that their works are suitably mounted. Any glass covering should be replaced by plastic or plexiglass in order to prevent injury;

4) Video artworks should be no more than ten minutes in length, and must be submitted in DVD format.

Submission Details:

1) Interested participants must submit a registration form and exhibit proposal on 20 August (before 5 P.M.);

2) Participants should correctly complete the registration form, and then attach the label to the upper left-hand corner of the back of the proposal. The label should indicate only the name of the work (in Chinese, Portuguese and English). In order to ensure impartiality during the selection process, please identify the artist only by reference number;

3) Address for submission of registration forms and exhibit proposals: Cultural Event Department (Visual Arts), Cultural Institute of the Macao SAR Government, Rua do Campo No. 78, Ed. Comercial Chong Kin, 8A;

4) The organiser will select qualifying proposals from among the entries submitted;

5) The organiser will announce the results of the selection process on or before September 10, 2004, and will notify the selected participants that they should commence production of their artworks;

6) Due to the editing requirements for the exhibition catalogue, artists must submit slides of their work on or before October 8, 2004. Alternatively, they may submit the work by that date so that it can be photographed;

7) The organiser will instruct participants to deliver their completed works to a designated address between 15-17 November 2004.

Submission Details for Exhibit Proposals:

1) Proposals for two-dimensional works (including calligraphy, paintings and photography) should be submitted as smaller or actual size proof images. Proposals for three-dimensional exhibits (including installations and sculptures) should include a drawing, a three-dimensional model or a three-dimensional image. Proposals for multimedia works (including videos) should include an original DVD copy.

2) Participants should include in their proposal a brief written explanation to help the selection committee understand and assess the work;

3) Artists should also include a brief description of how their ensemble should be exhibited.

Evaluation Procedures and Standards:

1) To ensure the quality of the final exhibition, all entries will undergo an evaluation process;

2) Selection will be performed in accordance with rigorous selection standards. The number of entries to be selected for exhibition shall be determined based on the scale of the exhibition;

3) Selection shall primarily be based on quality (including conceptual expression, level of creativity, and technique). At the same time, the selection panel will seek to ensure that each of the various media is adequately represented;

4) In accordance with Macao SAR laws and regulations on public screening, video entries must be submitted for review by Macao’s Performance Classification Committee.

The Selection Committee:

1) The organiser will invite individuals representing different fields of expertise from Macao or other regions to form the selection committee;

2) Decisions made by the majority of the members of the selection committee shall be considered final.

Participation Subsidies:

1) In order to encourage participation and defray production costs to the artists, the organizer will provide artists with a subsidy of three thousand Macao Patacas (MOP$3,000) for each ensemble selected for participation in the exhibition.

2) These production subsidies will be disbursed only after participants have submitted their completed works to the organizer;

3) Participants must pick up their subsidies in person, and must show some form of positive identification.

Other Important Information:

1) The organizer is entitled to reproduce exhibition entries for purposes of publication and promotion and, for the period of one year, shall be entitled to send the entries on travelling exhibitions anywhere outside of Macao. In so doing, the organizer shall not be required to make any further payment to the artist.

2 Submission of artworks shall be taken as evidence that the artist has understood and agreed to the above provisions.

3) The organizer retains the right of final interpretation and adjudication regarding any detail not clarified in these rules or any item that gives rise to dispute.
