The Ruins of St. Paul’s refer to the freestanding and intricately carved façade of what was originally the Church of Mater Dei, built in 1602-1640 and destroyed by fire in 1835. In 2005, the Ruins of St. Paul’s officially become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.



 

MACAO MUSEUM

The Macao Museum is located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mount Fortress. Its three levels are dedicated to the history and culture of Macao. The vast number of historically and culturally significant objects in the Museum’s collection demonstrate the ways of life of the various communities that have inhabited the city along the centuries. The Museum opened in 1998.

 

ST. DOMINIC’S CHURCH

Founded in 1587 by three Spanish Dominican priests who originally came from Acapulco in Mexico, this church is also connected to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary. The bell tower, at the back of the building, has been modified to allow the setting up of a small Museum of Sacred Art, now exhibiting a collection of around 300 artifacts.



 

DOM PEDRO V THEATRE

Built in 1860, the Dom Pedro V Theatre was the first Western-style theatre in all of China. It has survived as a highly significant cultural landmark in the context of the local Macanese community and remains a venue for important public events and celebrations.

 

SIR ROBERT HO TUNG LIBRARY

The Building was erected before 1894 and was purchased by Sir Robert Ho Tung, who used it as his summer retreat, in 1918. He passed away in 1955, and, in accordance with his will, the building was presented to the Macao Government for conversion into a public library. The Library opened to the public in 1958.

 

LOU KAU MANSION

Lou Kau Mansion, built in 1889, is the former residence of Lou Sio Wa (also known as Lou Kau), a prominent Macao businessman. The Mansion exudes the typical architectural style of a Guanxi residence in Guangzhou and has now become a popular venue for showcasing a variety of shows and activities related to Chinese folk arts and crafts.


 

MANDARIN’S HOUSE

Buses: 16, 18, 28B (Get off at Largo do Lilau.)

Built in 1869, the Mandarin’s House is the former residence of Zheng Guanying, a renowned modern Chinese philosopher. It is a traditional Chinese residential compound occupying an area of some 4,000 square metres. Following years of extensive renovation, the Mandarin’s House officially opened to the public in 2010.

 

OLD COURT BUILDING

Built in 1951, the Court Building originally served as the Macao Government Offices. Designated as a “building of architectural and artistic value”, it is now destined to become the future home of the Macao Central Library.

 

TAP SEAC GALLERY

This large, two-storey building and the buildings that surround it all date from the 1920s and are part of the Tap Seac Historic District. The Tap Seac Gallery building is included on the List of Macao Classified Buildings.

 

TAP SEAC SQUARE

Tap Seac Square is surrounded by a cluster of cultural facilities including libraries, exhibition venues and historical archives. Occupying an area of some 13,000m2, it is paved in mosaic cobblestones patterned in the rich Portuguese style.

 

LIVE MUSIC ASSOCIATION STUDIO

The Live Music Association (LMA) is a non-profit organisation, founded by a group of enthusiasts, with the aim of promoting the art of live music performance. The Studio can accommodate 150 people.

 

IAO HON GARDEN

Address: Rua do Mercado de Iao Hon
Buses: 2, 6, 7, 10B, 12, 19, 22, 30, 34

As the day to day leisure area for residents living in the district, Iao Hon Garden has served as the venue for the Outdoor Performing Arts Showcase of the Macao Arts Festival since 2009. Rich in content, these programmes attract a host of residents to the park.

 

MACAO CULTURAL CENTRE

The Macao Cultural Centre, one of the city’s cultural landmarks, offers professionally equipped venues and facilities for local and overseas performing groups. Presenting a diverse array of performances and workshops, the MCC plays an important role in enhancing the quality of life in Macau.

 

BRITO CLEMENTINA LEITÃO HO THEATRE

Address: Avenida de Artur Tamagnini Barbosa, Centro Comercial Jardim da Cidade, 3rd Floor Buses: 1, 3, 5, 9, 9A, 10, 10B, 18, 25, 27, 34 (Get off at Av. Artur de Tamagnini Barbosa)

The Brito Clementina Leitão Ho Theatre was refurbished by Caritas Macau in order to create a theatre for contemporary performing arts, reopening its doors in 2005. The Theatre has 711 fixed seats and 80 movable seats and it is equipped with professional lighting and sound systems, simultaneous interpretation rooms, a stage for professional performances, and a space for movie screenings, among other equipments.
